Bear Pepper Spray

The Sierra Club wants the Forest Service to require everyone who enters a national forest in grizzly bear country to carry bear mace spray Spokeswoman Heidi Godwin said in a news release, "The proper use of bear pepper spray will reduce human injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly bears killed in self defense, and help promote the recovery and survival of the grizzly bear."

We can send bear pepper spray to all states except Massachusetts.

We don't necessarily approve of making new laws, but it does show how effective bear spray is against bears. Also, make sure that the spray you are using is registered with the EPA for use against bears. There is a special formula for this and ordinary pepper spray is not recommended.

Bear Alert!!

Bears are increasingly showing up in urban and suburban areas. The primary reason is we are consuming their space. As the population of an area grows so does the number of homes, stores and businesses. As we encroach on their habitat they try to reclaim it.

Another reason that plays a significant role in bear encounters in suburban areas is food. As bears come out of hibernation and before they go into hibernation they are looking for food. Bears have a highly developed sense of smell and are drawn to the many wonderful odors being emitted from the kitchens, and trash cans of suburbia.

This is also the case with outdoor activities like camping, hunting, hiking and fishing. If you're in or near bear country, it is silly and dangerous not to carry bear pepper spray.

The IGBC (Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee) is a government agency working on bear safety techniques. From their website they say; "Each person should carry a can of bear pepper spray when working or recreating in bear habitat. Spray should be carried in a quick, accessible fashion such as in a hip or chest holster. In your tent, keep bear pepper spray readily available next to your flashlight. You should also keep a can available in your cooking area."

HOW DOES IT WORK? This highly recommended outdoor self defense tool capitalizes on the bears' ultra keen sense of smell. When a bear or mountain lion smells the OC pepper spray they are repelled. All pepper spray is oleoresin capsicum (OC). Human pepper sprays are in the 10-20 % range. If you see a spray that claims it is 10-20 % OC it is not a bear spray.

HOW TO USE IT. The IGBC recommends:

  • "Remove safety clip
  • Aim slightly down and towards the approaching bear. If necessary, adjust for cross wind.
  • Spray a brief shot when the bear is about 50 feet away.
  • Spray again if the bear continues to approach.
  • Once the animal has retreated or is busy cleaning itself, leave the area as quickly as possible (don't run) or go to an immediate area of safety, such as a car, tree, or building. Do not chase or pursue the animal."

Guard Alaska Bear pepper Spray contains nine ounces of spray. That's enough for a nine second shot up to 20 feet away. Try to cover the bear's entire nose and mouth area.

Do not antagonize a bear, especially a cub. The mother is certain to be close by and very protective of her young. Bears are surprisingly quick despite their lumbering appearance. If you are in bear country it is necessar to have your bear pepper spray with you.
